Fuel price hike necessary, says Muhyiddin

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the measure could have come as a surprise but it was appropriate as world economic analysts said it was necessary to ensure that Malaysia remained progressive.

The government’s decision to raise fuel prices this week was not meant to bring inconvenience to the people, but was a necessary step to save the national economy.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the measure could have come as a surprise but it was appropriate as world economic analysts said it was necessary to ensure that Malaysia remained progressive.

According to Bernama, Muhyiddin said the government was a responsible one and did not seek popularity merely to garner the people’s support.

“If nothing was done to reduce the subsidy for the fuel prices, the country would have to put up with an acute economic situation,” he said yesterday in Kampung Maju Jaya, Kempas, Johor.

Muhyiddin said he realised the government’s move to raise the price of RON95 petrol and diesel by 20-sen a litre was not well accepted by the people, but added that raising fuel prices was something that could not be averted due to the uncertain economy and the market price of fuel following the turmoil in West Asia which had affected Malaysia’s export.

“As an elected government, we must be responsible. We cannot reject the fuel prices just to be popular. Of course, giving away fuel for free can make the government even more popular.

“But the fundamental question is not to become popular. We want to do things right. We want to be a responsible government. We heard the advice of many economists before adopting the measure,” he said.

He said economists who attended the meeting on the National Fiscal Policy chaired by Prime Minsiter Datuk Seri Najib Razak also said that if the government did not reduce its fuel subsidy, the economic growth would be adversely affected.

This, he said, would have a direct impact on the government’s policy of implementing pro-people policies, including allocating RM24 billion annually to subsidise various essential goods.

He also said the fuel subsidy by the government was enjoyed by not only the needy but also by everyone, including foreigners working in the country, and this was different from the situation in other countries which only gave fuel subsidy for the poor.

“Therefore, we reduced the subsidy and helped the country save RM3.3 billion annually, and the money can be spent by the government in the form of the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M),” said Muhyiddin.

He added that the government was not marginalising the middle-class, and was taking the appropriate steps to reduce the burden they had to bear.

i think if the government cut down on corruption, and give less money to undeserving people, i think the nations can accept that. they must be a proper control.

it's now done without screening, and the different political party from BN is filling up name so that all the money is used up but to the wrong people. go listen to the poor, the businessman with big cars and factory and shops are given rm500 after and given another round of rm500. but those deserving ones get less after the so called 'service' rendered.

if we are able to save on corruption then the price hke might not be necessary. we are unhappy because its too sudden and now everyone voted BN now felt cheated. this hike will escalate others prices hike that will affect most of us.

please do something smart and dont make haste decision and get the nation fuming for blood.

we should have progress better than what it is today if corruption is plug 20+ over years ago, but alas instaed of progressing we are sliding back -  everyone in the government from the pm to the office boy in the government of corrupted. because the head is corrupted those below just follow - this is what we called 'you scratch my back i scratch yours' and is rotting badly.

everybody sees it but the government dont - we are in a sad state.

how can we see 2020 in progress if even the one that proclaim the vision 2020 is corrupted himself.

what a shame to the nation.

the corrupted government plan:

1). today price hike by 20 sen per litre.

2). just right before next election price go down by 2 sen.

3). nation happy and will vote for BN, then 3 months later increase by another 20 sen.

4). hold press and tell nation that this must be done in view of e****mic situation.

5). repeat step 1 to 5 and enjoy more corruption silently...

If only you thick headed guys could get it into yr moronic skulls. The people are fed up with corruption, closed tenders to cronys and unnecessary spending, so someone in the pipeline can make money. Why is there always a middle man in govt purchasing? Can't they deal direct with the buyer?

Submarine purchase, printing of plastic ringgit, buying of fighter jets and infrasturacture projects. Screw drivers are bought at rm100 when we can buy it at less than rm10. All these purchasers have go between. This is what most of us are FED UP WITH.And you morons just don't want to understand. And one stupid minister says prices will only go up by 0.1%. This fellow must have just landed from Mars.

As Rakyat we accept the decision of our leaders.

They must understand the 20 sen increase will fuel an excuse for every business entity to increase. Cost of one cup coffee in ordinary shop is now RM1.60 One year ago was only RM1.20 That's a 40 sen increase per cup. Cost of 1 plate of wantan mee is now RM5.00 and a year ago is was only RM3.80 That is a RM1.20 increase.
The 20 sen increase in petrol will hurt the ordinary man in the street. Now only will he pay RM40 more a month on petrol, he may need to fork out another RM100 for other increases. But the poor guy is hanging on to his job, with little hope of pay increase as he knows business is not good and not likely to get an increment. His pay check keeps shrinking in value. In the meantime all the rich, all the corrupted continue to enjoy life in their plush limos without a care in the world.

The reality is the man on the street is suffering in silence and irrespective if you complain or not, corruption will continue and we the rakyat will end up at the short end of the stick. God help us all.

We are not stupid not be able to understand the world e****mic as well as on electing a person not by popularity but by capability.

We can understand if the world e****mic is not stable cause the oil price hike up, but we may not be able to understand if the reason given to hike up the oil price due to the BRIM.

We are not a UPSR graduate not be able to understand the e****mic term if been explain the reason, cause we also went and study higher level.

Do we need to go to University and study e****mic for 5 years and then only we can understand the e****mic crisis is it and what cause the oil price hike up?

Fine if the party that running the government feel that it's not popularity what they are looking, so, explain to the public that the fact, and not just telling us some story of popularity.

We should vote in the Pakatan as government! They get all of us going for free market e****my..... Price of RON 95 pe****t RM 2.73 without paying taxes of RM 2.00 to the government yet.  That adds up to RM20billion before plus another RM60billion in taxes to be collected.

Vote in the Pakatan government .  We want to know what pakatan wants to do with RM 80billion.  More development or put the extra in Pakatan government pocket as BN are corrupted.

We the people don't need any subsidy. End the BR1M. What we need is Pakatan government.  Everyone go vote for Pakatan and enjoy free market e****my so that we can pay market prices.

We hate price increases of RM0.20 per liter of petrol.  We love uncorrupted government in the form of Pakatan.

So what can the pakatan govt can do with so much money??

Would someone let me know?

Charge the foreigners for the full cost of school, hospital, other government facilities and then you do not need to reduce the subsidy to Malaysian. If the system is inefficient, change the system and don't penalize the Rakyat.

The e****my is weak and the country is fighting for survival now as acknowledgeby DPM? ..because the ruling political parties stewardship being poor handling of national development and the overall country management. No matter how much measure you go on belt-tightening initiatives now(which anyway has been long overdue) and go on colon-scraping diet ..the present government's indiscreet spending without prudence **** self-con****nd indiscretion has landed Malaysia in dire straights(if they wld care to admit?) on acute situation National deficits in balance of payment situation and the national foreign reserves in a precarious situation.

DPM spoke like an uneducated(academic or otherwise)self-serving politician(forever with personal agenda) than a self-respecting national leadership-in-action seorang Pemimpin Negara yg miliki kredibiliti dan kaliber.

With a team of e****mist just like the previous NEAC team during the 1997 e****mic crisis should be set-up to commence deliberating on what are the possible courses of impactful action we have as available options the Government could/ should pursue now as an immediate measure which could significantly reduce the national deficit. Study the different possible avenues and the possible near future scenarios the country will be facing ...not only unwisely work on national strategic planning base on probabilities but a vital scenario thinking/planning exercise base on dynamic possibilities of ever evolving world e****mic landscape. . One thing for sure ..the income revenue of the country from exports count and the ever crucial declining n unattractive FDIs has to be addressed. Mere belt-tightening effort and hiking the petrol price through subsidy withdrawal is not going to save the country ..but careful initiatives in quadrupling our national resources exports(staying competitively wt good governance) and the successful attracting of FDI investors are stronger channels to pull the country out of doldrums .. wouldn't  you think so too .. You have just spoiled my clubs motorcycle trip convoy plan. Buat hidup ramai orang tergendala. Oh..what a fish!

Tdk payah berbanding dengan Negara jiran Singapura .. Negara Malaysia sendiri pun dah ujud cukup bakat .. kalau rakyat bersama bagi naungan dan endorse support for the Government of Malaysia.
