Mukhriz to announce his decision tomorrow

He said this after meeting and receiving the unanimous backing of the party's state division leaders at his official residence in Alor Setar last night.

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, the son of Malaysia's longest serving prime minister, will announce tomorrow if he will contest for one of Umno's three vice-president seats.

He said this after meeting and receiving the unanimous backing of the party's state division leaders at his official residence in Alor Setar last night.

If the 48-year old Kedah menteri besar enters the fray, it will put Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in an uncomfortable position because if the current party president stays neutral, it is likely that his cousin, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein could be a loser when votes are tallied.

Apart from Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Hishamuddin who are looking to retain their VP posts, also in the running are Felda chairman Tan Sri Isa Samad and former Malacca chief minister Datuk Seri Ali Rustam, although Ali is said to have been offered a senatorship and a plum corporate post to withdraw from the race.

In recent days, party president Najib has been sending out feelers to party delegates and power brokers that he would like the current slate of Umno vice-presidents to be returned at the upcoming party polls.

But his plan of retaining Zahid, Shafie and Hishammuddin is threatened now with Mukhriz's likely entry into the contest.

After the meeting last night, Mukhriz said: “I will make an announcement on Thursday".

Mukhriz's father, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said the party needs renewal and younger leaders, in what is seen as a call to party veterans to allow Mukhriz and those his age to move up in the party.

It is understood that Najib has also been talking about renewal and the need for younger leaders to step up although he has thrown his tacit support behind the likes of Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil to keep their party posts.

Nominations are on September 28 while the elections are on October 19. The party’s assembly will be held in December 2013.

I'm not a member of any political party but I'm a keen observer of UMNO.  In my humble opinion, of all the 3 current UMNO VPs, only one namely Shafie Afdal is worth retaining as the VP and the other 2 have been either arrogant & ****y or prone to making stupid statements unbefitting as UMNO VPs or even as ministers in Najib's cabinet.  Young blood like Mukhriz and Khairy should be more welcome in the general interests of Umno's future.  People like Tan Sri Isa and Ali Rustam, irrespective of the apparent support for them, should just "sedar diri" and make way for a rejuvenation of the party. I hope Mukhriz will say yes for the VP post.

Sanusi Junid was consulted among the veterans. Predictable actions are the challenge by Deputy President on President (based on rumour Zahid wants to take on TSMY), Kedah MB will go for Deputy NOT VP, PEMUDA will be taken over by Akramsyah, change in WANITA too. Some fellows are carrying big briefcases around the country. Couple of bags snatched up in Pengerang. Hidup Pembawa Beg.. Long Live the Bag Carriers!

I hope he will say yes...

After a yes and If he win, he must go forward with having smart, brilliant and honest  adviser with full wisdom surround him. This is for the sake of Malaysian future. UMNO itself need a huge change internally and externally in its system plus program management. This process are to cure UMNO and bring it back to life again and much more need to done by Mukhriz...

Hope he's ready for it.
