Earthquake magnitude of 8.7 strikes Aceh

Tremors felt in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Penang.

JAKARTA, April 11, 2012 (AFP) - A massive earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday, US and Indonesian monitors reported, prompting a Pacific-wide tsunami alert.

The quake's magnitude was 8.7, according to a revised measurement from the US Geological Survey, and it struck 431 kilometres (268 miles) off the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh.

Banda Aceh was near the epicentre of a devastating quake in 2004 that triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, which killed 170,000 people.

The latest tremor was felt as far afield as Thailand and southern India, residents said.

In Malaysia, tsunami alerts have been issued. "We have issued a tsunami alert. We urge people to keep away from the beach in (the states of) Kedah, Perlis, Langkawi, Penang and Perak," Che Gayah Ismail, deputy director-general of the Malaysian Meteorological Department, told AFP. "People are advised to keep away from the beaches. It is not an evacuation order."

Felt this for 3 minutes in Seagate - Suntech office - Penang. I thought like my colleague pulling my chair, then realise every one standing and seeing outside. Its good no one hurted anywhere.  I got this experience first time on 16 Floor office..and my friend felt this on 30 floor. Hope i never have this again....

wov.....i was watching movie with my friends at teatre...suddenly the chairs were shaking....almost blank wat to do...luckily de guide ask us to get out...tis was really shocking..the moment was really ridiculous..hopefull​y everyone is good out there...juz pray hard to god..

I heard that one apartment in butterworth is evac by firemen cause it is leaning after the quake.

Hi, just for info, i live in an apartment at **** Uda butterworth. I felt the shake 20 minutes ago, my stand fan was swaying left to right, if that should better describe the shake here. Most of us left the apartment and now hoping never to feel it again.

Hi, my mum just called me from Pangkor Island that she very scared then only I know got earthquake happened in Indonesia again. Actually she felt the tremors from yesterday night, she felt dizzy & can't sleep for the whole night. Furthermore, this afternoon felt the tremors for few minutes when she sitting on a chair. Hopefully no tsunami happen in everywhere.

And here in Kangar,Perlis, we felt some vibrations at about 4.30p.m. ,the flats in Kp. Bakar and around the twon in Kangar.

Felt the dizziness too and thought it was the tea that caused it.Two to three hours later the normally packed food court near the MMU area was quite empty.

11.04.2012 (Wednesday) i.e. today - about 4.45pm, we also felt the tremor (lasted for about 3 to 4 minutes) at the surrounding of Taman Bahagia (Happy Garden) [behind a school] in Seberang Perak, Alor Setar, Kedah.

i woke up at 4.35pm and right after 1 minute at 4.36 my bed moved a bit i thought its my imagination then one of my housemates rushed in my room and he asked me did you feel anything i told him yes then we checked the news and we came to knw that earthquake has struck in indonesia

We felt second tremor at about 6.30pm.....but the 1st one was terribly shaken.

My wife felt the tremour in Ipoh she felt dizzy for a while.
