LAHAD DATU: An unknown number of villagers on an island close to the Sabah-Philippines sea border are being held hostage by a group of armed foreigners since Tuesday. The situation is still very much hazy though Malaysian security forces claim they are aware of what is happening and have surrounded the area when the intruders are said to be holing up. And from what we have gathered, an even large group of these intruders, who are said to be stronger and more dangerous, are on its way to the island as reinforcements.

UPDATED: Malaysian security forces have surrounded the foreigners for encroaching into the waters off Lahad Datu, Sabah. More than 100 members of the group are suspected to be members of a militant group from southern Philippines

Sources told THE BORNEO INSIDER that the island is named Pulau Lukiau, an otherwise unheard of island amongst many islands that dot the Celebes Seas between southern Philippines or what is now known as the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and Sabah’s east coast. However, we could not get any of the top brass in the security forces; that is the police in Sabah nor the Commander of the Fifth Brigade which is based at Lok Kawi, to confirm what we have heard. However, Sabah police chief Datuk Hamza Taib said Wednesday night that he may schedule a Press conference Thursday to provide details, if any. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar was quoted as saying that the armed intruders are believed to be from the Philippines.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi said he had ordered Armed Forces chief Jen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin to take immediate action together with the police over the matter. Said our source: “This little heard island (which is closer to Tambisan) is very far away from Lahad Datu town, probably takes five or six hours to reach the town. “The kampong people (on the island) are being held hostage in the mosque. We do not know how many people are being held and neither do we know how many armed men there are at this moment.”

Bernama quoted Ismail as saying that security forces close to the area had directed the intruders to put down their weapons and surrender, but till Press time (2.00am Thursday) nothing was forthcoming. Ismail said the intrusion was related to problems in southern Philippines and that the situation is under control. “The public need not be unduly worried," he added in a statement.

Earlier, in another Bernama report, Ahmad Zahid said security forces have detained a group of foreigners for posing as military personnel off Sabah on Tuesday. He said the foreigners were dressed in military uniform and robes were trying to encroach into Malaysian waters off Lahad Datu. “The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) had been directed to work closely with the police and take immediate action. "We don't want our national defence elements to be exposed, including in Lahad Datu, Sabah," he told reporters, adding that Malaysia will seek cooperation from neighbouring countries. Ahmad Zahid said it was also to ensure that action was taken immediately to keep the national defence and security at high level.

THE BORNEO INSIDER sources also inform us that the intruders could be a breakaway faction of the Moro Islamic Liberation (MILF) or the dreaded Abu Sayyaf. Tambisan, is a coastal area located 165km from Lahad Datu. The main economic activity here is oil palm plantations. It is also a 45-minute speed boat ride from the Philippine island of Bongao. In November last year, two cousins - an estate manager and a supervisor - were abducted by armed men while visting a birds nest structure at their oil palm plantation in the Tambisan area. The two only by the surname of Tung were believed taken to Southern Philippines. Talks of militants in about a dozen small boats attempting to land in Lahad Datuu have been rife for the past two weeks.

Wednesday evening and night, Lahad Datu town was almost deserted as people opted to stay indoors, with the heavy presence of security forces in town being a cause of concern. The news rekindled a tragic incident in September 1985 when 11 people were killed and several injured after armed men dressed in military fatigues fired randomly at the public before robbing RM200,000 from a Standard Chartered Bank branch and Malaysia Airlines office in Lahad Datu.

This shows Malaysia national defense, security and strategy  has some weaknesses because Malaysia compound and doorsteps have been peed and **** by foreign militants for so many times and yet the government still won't able to defense  the intrusion of these militants. That why Malaysia government need to be aware cautious and don't simply giving out  citizenship to any foreigners who may come from countries which have the militants activities.......who knows those seek for the citizenship may be agents for the militants and they will be a threat to the national security and also the locals.

Now East Malaysia already infested with lots of foreign immigrants that straight away entitle the citiznship  and also bumiputra status.......Did our government really screen through their background before giving out the status to them? Our government and also national security should wake up and so are the locals of both Sabah and Sarawak states......These foreigners may be a real threat to the national security because these influx of foreigners some may be link to the militants that have the dream of invading Sabah and Sarawak and annex them to be one of their Islamic states......If this happened then the locals will definitely losing their rights and status, they also need to suffer through the war between Malaysia government and also those foreign radicals .

Malaysia would probably "pay" off these militants handsomely for the release of the hostages...like they did sometime ago so the militants will come again and hold the villagers for ransom...This way the militants will be rich to do whatever they want!!!....period!!!

Of course they want ransom and definitely they are not friendly to the Sabah people. Otherwise would they kidnap them? What utter rubbish are you talking about Choun Yoong?

Mr. Choun Yoong! The situation concerns national security. Why on earth with someone with your level of intelligence would deviously related this situation by saying that 'these intruders are not keen on citizenship'. We know where and what you are trying to equate whi**** totally ridiculous. Stick to the issue and don't try to deviate.

Now we all can see what is the use of 2 Submarines. What is needed are more surface fighting ships.

Not something unuseable for big warfare which we cannot win underwater. Fast, I mean Very Very FAST

surface ships for more pa****ll over OUR SEA WATER. Better still Helicopters. With CANNONS.

See, these MILF types got their way, annexing Mindanao from Philippine; so, now they are expanding their influence into Sabah..."Give an inch, take a mile", ok...Israel has their terrorist elements, now Malaysia will get a dose of the same medicine...The lesson here is "Never give in" & "Hold the line", yes. -KLM-

I totally agree with 'Angry Malaysian' that where are our national defence personnels then? Do you ever make your rounds? It is a mystery to me, how can a large group of armed foreigners able to land in our soil without being noticed? This shows that you are not doing your  homework well. You argue that we have a long coastline? Yes, that's true! You know that Sabah has the potential treat from a neigbouring islands populace of Philippine, therefore, we should station as many security personals as possible, say, station security personnel at every distance of 10 or less nautical miles.  Your present tactical is completely 'zero!!!!!!!!! Why I say so? Armed foreigners complete with army uniform, M16 rifle are able to land safely in our soil. This implies that Sabahan people are not well protected! I can learn from the newspapers that quite a number of Filipinos or even Indonesian are easily awarded citizenship but many people from Long Singut in Kapit division, Sarawak denied birth certificate or identity cards. Yes, they were issued identity cards with expiry dates. Is this the way we treat our fellow Malaysians who reside in remote rural areas? Refuse to leave....? No choice......but ought to use FORCE mind you! These armed foreigners pose a treat to national security, especially to Sabah people. Do something, please. Never handle it lightly.

These intruders are not keen on citizenship but prefer either ransom, or most probably, the island itself. Either way, it's not friendly to Sabahans.
