On the eve of the first anniversary of the 13th general election, Malaysians are disillusioned with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over his failed policies, while Pakatan Rakyat faced the prospect of breaking up over the hudud issue, DAP’s Lim Kit Siang said.

The veteran DAP leader said the past one year had brought great disillusionment to those who hoped for political change in Malaysia where the rule of law, justice, good governance and democracy are upheld.

"In broadband speed, education, economic justice, the rule of law, respect for human rights and good governance, Malaysia is trailing behind more and more countries, which have hastened in the past one year.

"Even more worrying, nation-building or the creation of a united Malaysian nation out of the diverse races, religions and regions has never suffered such a serious blow as in the past year, despite the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's 1Malaysia policy and international campaign for a Global Movement of Moderates," the DAP parliamentary leader said in a statement today.

On its Pakatan partner PAS's move to implement hudud in Kelantan, Lim warned that the possibility of the opposition pact splintering cannot be taken lightly, saying the issue had snowballed into a "political tornado" in recent weeks.

Those who do not support hudud law, said Lim, are not anti-Islam, and base their opposition on the Malaysian Constitution's provision for a secular democratic nation.

He said the electorate who voted for Pakatan in GE13 did so for a change of government, political and nation-building policies, and not for hudud.

Those who do not support hudud law, said Lim, are not anti-Islam, and base their opposition on the Malaysian Constitution's provision for a secular democratic nation.

"Pakatan Rakyat would not have continued to deny the Barisan Nasional two-thirds parliamentary majority if hudud was an agenda for Pakatan in the GE13.

"There can be no doubt that all the three Pakatan parties of DAP, PKR and PAS would have suffered serious electoral losses if hudud had been an issue in GE13," he added.

Citing the Umno bastion of Johor as an example, Lim said Pakatan would not have made significant inroads in the southern state, with DAP winning four parliamentary and 13 state seats, PAS four state seats and PKR one parliamentary and one state seat, if the Shariah criminal law had been part of the agenda.

The Gelang Patah MP said Malaysians wanted to see Pakatan to improve and take over Putrajaya come the next general election, but warned that if hudud continued to be a major issue, Pakatan might go the way of the previous Barisan Alternatif, the loose coalition formed by the opposition in previous general elections.

"Then all the three component parties of DAP, PKR and PAS will be the losers. The only winners will be Umno and BN parties. This will be an unmitigated disaster for all Malaysians," he added.

"He said the electorate who voted for Pakatan in GE13 did so for a change of government, political and nation-building policies, and not for hudud."

This is the crux of the matter, that the vote was not to be taken in support for hudud.  If PAS is reading that GE13's vote was for hudud, then PAS has been short-sighted and have misread the results of GE13.

Every Malaysian with BRAINS will know that we are lacking in terms with many many way compare with others Country. Just look around in Malaysian, which Leader are capable to run and put our Malaysia on par with the rest of the World? Sadly.....nobody from the present Government. Here in Malaysia we are more wasting time debating on religions matter(which God are more superior then others). Malaysia will never can produce people with good brains simply because, Bright non-Malay Student which have good brains are out from the Country because they know they don't have good future here or they don't have a chance to get scholarship at all. Look at Korean National car(KIA or Hyundai) compare with our PROTON car? Why theirs design are much more better then us?  Because they have GOOD BRAINS!

What happen to freedom to choose what religion in this country? Do we need to set of law in this country? Fight corruption in this country is more important than wanting to have 2 set of laws.Even our former PM Matahahir say corruption is worst than before. Please do not compare Malaysia with Singapore who started with no resources after leaving Malaysia. They even have to buy water from Malaysia and they manage to do better than our resources full country.

LAST WEEK ( ON 1ST MAY ) BRUNEI ANNOUNCED THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE 1ST PHASE OF THEIR HUDUD LAW, TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE 2ND PHASE LATER THIS YEAR.  THE REMAINING ASPECTS OF HUDUD LAW WILL THEN BE IMPLEMENTED NEXT YEAR, "THAT WILL EVENTUALLY INCLUDE TOUGH PENALTIES SUCH AS DEATH BY STONING".

WHAT EFFECT WILL THE BRUNEI SITUATION ABOVE HAVE ON THE MALAYSIAN SCENARIO NOW BEFORE US?  WILL OUR MUSLIM PARLIAMENTARIANS IN PARTICULAR BE INFLUENCED ENOUGH & VOTE NEXT MONTH TO ALLOW KELANTAN STATE TO IMPLEMENT THEIR HUDUD LAW, AS IT WILL BE CONFINED TO ONLY 1 STATE?  RELIGION IS USUALLY VERY IMPORTANT TO BELIEVERS OF A FAITH.  PERHAPS A BETTER WAY WOULD BE TO CONDUCT A REFERENDUM ( OPINION POLL ) OF THE PEOPLE IN THAT STATE TO FIND OUT IF THEY WANT HUDUD?  THANK YOU

Jo, there you go again. I was looking at the country's context and you are looking at bi-partisan politics. Now we talk politics. It doesn't matter who the government is if she practices the right policies for the long term good of the country. Who says UMNO Baru cannot continue as the government it she practices and implements correct and realistic policies on a national level. But, on the contrary, what you see now it that they are continuously playing up sectarian politics based on the inherent weaknesses of a section of the population to ensure their continued political survival. Their elites and cronies continue to plunder the nation's wealth while the majority of that section of the population and others continue to receive the crumbs. With the falling of the educational standards in schools and universities and the plundering of wealth, Malaysia can only get poorer and not richer.  Can't you still not notice what's going on after  55 years of their rule? Surely you can agree that a country can never become an advanced country if she has a majority of half-past-six professionals, politicians and corrupt administrators. It would be foolish to think the country can bluff the whole world all the time when the nation's dirt is quickly and continuously floating up the surface for all to see in our internet world. It will soon clog up the cyber world. We are all Malaysians concerned about our nation's growth and development. So, it is not DAP, PKR or PAS that is creating trouble for the nation but concerned Malaysians taking up the cudgel to fight injustices and wrong policies of the current government incidentally led by UMNO-Baru. Like some others. you seems to pick on DAP likely because they are more outspoken and brash with their political approach and they are Chinese, often the punching bag of the Malay politicians and their supporters. Other than this what is there to fear if there is a change of government? The Malays will still continue to lead the country whatever one wants to say albeit probably with a change of political and administrative approach, hopefully, for the betterment for all. Rather than watch the country hopelessly sliding down south in all fields, especially in education, finance and social divisiveness, why don't we give ourselves a chance to revert the hopeless situation with a change of government which I think is overdue! Well, never try never know.. So, it is not about DAP or anyone else. It is about Malaysians wishing and deciding to give themselves a hope for a better Malaysia for all irrespective of race or religion for the future generations especially. It is all about having a chance and an alternative for a better Malaysia for all Malaysians in future. Think. Why do many of us want to oppose so vehemently the unbalanced policies when most would not even be around when the positive fallout, if any, comes about with a peaceful change of government? Its for the future good of the country. We do not want this country to slag behind others because of bad policies and turn to become another poor country looked down by neighbours and others in the real world. Jo, I hope you will not continue to be as short-sighted as many of the UMNO Baru leaders. They have mostly been a bunch of self-serving and greedy politicians who make use of their gullible supporters' staunch political support to stash away their ill-found wealth in other parts of the world. Have you heard of Cayman Islands? Others? Well, Let's not wait any longer, do the necessary to stop these  unworthy people, give some other party or coalition a chance to rule, before this country literally goes kaput, sorry, I mean bankrupt! Jo, over to you.

Yes, Brunei implements hudud but the question is are the Brunei royal members exempted from hudud? Hudud stones adulterers. I recall reading Time magazine back in 1999 about a Brunei royal prince who had many women n prostitutes. If that is true, is that considered adultery? if there is an exemption, is that considered objectively a hypocrisy?

YL Yow - I agree with you to a certain extent about meritocracy. Actually only one country in this world practises Meritocracy (Singapore PAP) and this policy will soon prove unacceptable because it discriminates the lesser and promotes monopoly. The rich will become richer and stronger and will become dominant to the point of suppressing all competitors. America is about freedom and equal opportunity and BN is about sharing of power and wealth! However, Malaysian Chinese are now supporting the DAP whi**** PAP in Malaysia!

A "narcissist" speaking for his party's political ambitions and not for welfare of Malaysians as claimed (in my humble opinion at least!)

How come his own party cannot convince their "partner-in-arms" partner, PAS, not to table the "hudud" motion in parliament ??? If they cannot sit at the same table to thrash out this issue and come to an understanding how are they ever going to run the nation? They will more likely "turn back the cloc****he nations achievement so far including unity!

In a way it is true what he said that PR is only good around election time and thus has no capability to unite and run this country. If he was convinced that PAS joined PR because they subscribe to the PR "vision" (if they have a vision at all) then how wrong was he :-)

In my opinion,it is time for PAS to unite with UMNO (if they wish to pursue unity of the Ummah) as MCA is already talking about working with DAP on the hudud issue.

I am not sure if LKS ever watches the "world news" to realize that things are not as bad in this country as he and his party make it out to be! The fact that his party and allies control 3 states in Malaysia and that Chinese education is guaranteed in this country says much about democracy and freedom in this country. Unless, democracy to him means that PR is the one in power! (this one certainly defies logic!)

Kit Siang ni tak sabar! Wants to rule fast and all the time! Let Malaysians decide on all the issues ==> Malays will suffer if Meritocracy is practised! Singapore original Chinese are now facing the problem their Malay brothers faced before. The Malays' welfare in Singapore (poorest with household income less than half of the average Singaporean) is no longer a subject of discussion.  With Singapore's substantial debts, Meritocracy Policy will have to be continued at the expense of the indigenous Chinese population whom LKY says ==> lacks talent! Meritocracy favours the rich and talented and discriminates the poor and less talented!
