Humans to go extinct in 100 years, scientist predicts

PhysOrg.com, an online science news service, reports that distinguished Australian scientist Professor Frank Fenner has predicted that humanity would likely meet its end within a century.

Fenner cited overpopulation, environmental destruction and climate change as the primary factors which will drive mankind into extinction.

Professor Fenner's voice is important and well-regarded because of his instrumental role in the global eradication of smallpox. He has had a life-long interest in environmental issues, and is a recipient of many illustrious awards, including the WHO (World Health Organization) medal.

Perhaps infinitely more worrisome is Fenner's confidence that the situation is irreversible. While there are currently efforts to grapple with those issues, he asserted that we are beyond the point of no-return due to the magnitude of these effects we have had on Earth since the Industrial Age. He said they have come to rival the impact of ice ages or comet crashes.

The professor noted that while climate change is only at its infancy, it will probably be the force behind our extinction. He also predicted that Earth's ever-increasing population will result in more violent conflicts over food and other resources.

Humans are too busy trying to outdo each other, trying to be the riches guy on the block, drive big cars, live in mansions, as if we can ive forever. The truth is none of us will live past 100 years, while 80 is a probably too old to do anything useful. Does it really matter if the earth blows up tomorrow, when we dont even live well today?

mohdsamychong,

this is already happening because of the stupidity of people like you & by the time people like you figure things out, it will be too late.

If it Earth natural disaster, we all can face this extinction just like our ancestor did. But if it man-made disaster we all gonna die only some will remain alive. And if it cosmic disaster it will be all over for us.

Overpopulation, environmental destruction and climate change, huh...

1. The total land size of Earth is ~150 MILLION square km. Let's assume that humanity can only survive on 40% of that surface (the rest being desert, forests, mountains, Greenland etc), which is 60 million square km. There are currently 7 billion people on Earth, which is roughly 0.008 square km per person. Which doesn't sound like much, but that's equal to 8.5 thousand square metres or ~2 ACRES of land per person. GIven modern farming techniques, I assure you that 1 acre of land can provide sufficient food for over 16 people. Thank the late Norman Borlaugh for that. Overpopulation is not going to be an issue, especially with birth rates declining in many Western countries.

2. Forests still cover 18% of the world's land area, and with concerted efforts, a great deal of reforestation is going on in developed nations as well as China. In addition, most nations at least pay lip service to the idea of national reserves. But the major point is that humans are the only species who extensively change their environment to suit them, and not the other way around. I think we can hack it even if the world became all farmland and concrete jungle.

3. Climate change... ah, remember the old days when it was called global warming? Except that sometimes, the world cooled down. Oh, can't have that, we'll have to call it climate change, so whether it warmed up or cooled down, it would be our fault. Never mind that one volcanic explosion would release 1000x the so-called greenhouse gases that ALL of our industrial activities (including our vehicles) put out in a year.

Prof Fenner is positively Malthusian in his outlook. Malthus was dead wrong, and excepting the Second Coming, I'll willing to bet that two centuries from now, somebody will say that Prof X was positively Fennerian in his outlook.

Siuyinh,  Even if the 100 years figure is just semantic, I don't think you need the law of probability to figure out that we're on a certain course.  Perhaps it is Fenners regard for the sanctity of life that's behind this article. Faith and hope are elements in people who care. What about the people who don't care at all?

Contrary to what the Mayan's believe that the world ends in 2012, many scholars believe it will end in 2068. So what ever it is, it seems to gel that all will end within 100 years as in this article. .

Over exploitation of natural resources..land and sea leading first to animal and insect extinctions will cause worldwide famine death war...unless sanity prevails and sustainability is embraced world wide. Not global warming, global destruction of wild habitat. Global warming is a red herring which has been promoted by major polluters and rapers of the planet who are doing the real damage. Carbon is not pollution, the temperature is not increasing the ice is not melting.

Prediction is good for everyone to let us get ready when GOD comes. There are many

factors that could cause the end of the world..it is a very old Earth indeed..God would favour those who would ask for forgiveness of their sins and to know Him.Let us love one another, forgive and forget the past...show less of history..we should have more students  exchange programme...children mingling with various races...war can be eradicated...the end of the world may not come so soon

It will always be the same. We humans will continue with our lives till the 99th year where we ll be united to fix it that is if we have enough time. For now Scientist should just focus on fixing the environment instead of finding ways to destroy it faster xd FYI most deadly invention is all done by scientist who actually supposed to save the earth eg. NUCLEAR BOMB xd

Don't care who he is, that's the most stupid thing I've heard. Over crowded? Birth control. Weather conditions, go green...whatever it is, humans has self-preservation. We will invents tools to protect ourselves until judgement day comes.

from sticks and stones being yielded by unconsciously angry hands. Perhaps it takes at least 2 angry hands to kill 1 angry hand.  And then years passed, the sticks and stones suddenly become swords and parangs. Hmm very hard to say but perhaps 1 mad parang-man can kill at least 1 other mad person. And then many years passed, the parang suddenly become rifle. Wah.. perhaps a mad rifleman can take down at least 2 madmen charging at him.. depends how fast he reload. And then many years passed, the machine gun.. and then.. tanks.. then nuclear bomb.. then hydrogen bomb,.. then death rays...

The weapons evolve but the anger, fear, ego still the same. Habis la... hancur la like this....mati la...worst part is the person who use modern things thought he is modern. That is really tragic. Once the remote control with red button is in the hands of a madman.. that is it. Be aware that there is nothing wrong with power. It doesnt corrupt. Power is neutral. In the hands of politicians power had been destructive. But giv the same power to a christ,a buddha, a mohammed, or krishna...the power will be creative.

As many has commended due to sexual behaviour and mind set the extinction can be earlier.  It is really a self destruction with same sex marriage which is unproductive but also destructive due to diseases of these type of sexual favours esp AIDS or HIV. think of those that dont want to have any union or marriage. think of those who are married but dont want children and those that want children but through adoption. There all those that want only a single child too play a part with the simple mathematics of more death than birth. Look at the increasing abortion rates, look at the famime or lack of foods in those countries where thousands of people are starved to death. look at the sucide bombers, terrorism, militants and drug lords that kills.

FROM the Bible;- Book of revelation Chapter 21; verses1 to 4

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying "Now the dwelling of Godis with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people. and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

Another one of these doomsday theorists!? C'mon - this guy's obviously an atheist - too cynical about the whole situation to offer any hope to anybody!!! His attitude also gives it away that he's not far in his heart from where Adolf Hitler probably was regarding the sanctity of life!  It's either that or the MSN media themselves have blown his side of the story out of it's own perspective. But if it is really the case that Fenner believes in a hopeless fate, then this says alot about the fact that his current analysis is hardly worth trusting - ok it's true that there is a crisis but it's equally true that there's hope beyond a hundred years. If Fenner is really this hard-nosed about this whole situation, don't look to him - but look to the Almighty Creator for help - He alone gives us more power and awareness as to how to change things for the better. What's more is He guarantees us life and freedom and promises that humanity and the entire creation will not end but rather, will be changed for the better, AMEN!
